CHAPTER 173

Along with the eleven others in their group, Kari sprinted as fast as possible through the tunnel. Monsters followed behind them, never giving up ground.

They knew we’d try to enter this way. They allowed us to come down here so they could cut us off. We’re all going to die! Kari knew, already covering herself in ice armor for protection.

“There’s nowhere for us to escape!” Isa-bri voiced similar concerns.

“Just keep going!” Willis shouted. “Get to the ladder if you can!”

As the panicking group neared the entrance leading up into the watchtower, another group of monsters came at them from the other direction.

They knew we were here all along! Kari determined. They sent monsters from both ends of the tunnel to trap us. They want us to climb to the surface so they can kill us one-by-one.

The Halfling’s theory proved correct once they reached the ladder. The warrior archer named Erick leapt onto it and climbed quickly, trying to escape the inevitable death they faced by remaining in the tunnel. At the top, he pushed open a metal hatch, but monsters immediately grabbed and impaled him. His blood fell, splattering onto the faces of those nearest the ladder who looked up in horror.

“There’s nowhere to go!” Isa-bri cried. The torchlight coming near them grew brighter, as did the grunts and growls of the monsters hurrying to slaughter their trapped prey.

“What do we do?” Willis asked in desperation, standing with the group all horded around the base of the ladder.

Torgore pulled out his giant, double-bladed sword and roared at the approaching enemy, making his choice known. As everyone else drew their weapons, preparing to fight monsters they knew they couldn’t overcome, Kari shouted, “There’s another way!”

She turned to Captain Uwogu carrying the explosives. “We can ignite your scorcher bombs and blackpowder to clear the way above us,” she pointed to the top of the ladder where they knew monsters waited on the other side of the hatch.

“Do it,” Krause ordered immediately, prompting the warrior to rummage through his satchels, quickly preparing the items for the blast. “You five,” Krause directed Willis and the four other warriors. “Get ready to take on the horde. I’ll join you in a second.

“Torgore,” he continued giving directions, grabbing the ogre. “You’re our best fighter. Climb the ladder, throw the explosives, and take care of any monsters that aren’t killed.”

“Here,” Uwogu handed the Holders Keep gladiator one of the satchels and a torch. “Once you light the canvas on fire, you’ll have about ten seconds before it explodes.”

“What’s that one for?” Kari asked Uwogu about the satchel the captain kept as Torgore ascended the ladder.

Deep down, she knew the answer, but didn’t want to admit it. Krause, however, wasn’t afraid to disclose the grim reality of the situation.

“We’re not all going to make it,” he glanced to where Willis and the four warriors stood ready to take on the approaching horde. “We have to make sure no one follows those who escape.”

No sooner did Krause finish
